What I used to fuel my 4 hour mountain bike ride
For a big training day on the mountain bike I started my day with a big bowl of over night oats and a black coffee. Black coffee is a must every morning. My over night oats topped with honey, yoghurt and runny sweet and salted peanut butter.

For the oats I had;
- 60g oats
- 150ml semi-skimmed milk
- 100g low fat yoghurt
- however much honey and peanut butter I felt necessary!
On my way over to the ride I ate about 4 slices of fruit loaf, the stuff you can buy in Lidl.
For the ride itself I packed the following;
- Torq gels
- Tore jellies
- M&S sweets
- 30g Torq carb mix in my bottle
- 3L water in my camelback
When I stopped on the way over to meet who I was riding with, as well as picking up the fruit loaf to snack on, on the way over, I also picked up pre made crepes with salted caramel filling. I’m not sure what possessed me to do so, but I did not regret this decision at all on the ride.

Whilst getting dressed in the car park I ate a few sweets, stuffed 4 gels and some crepes in my back pocket and what was left over fizzy Haribo’s I’d found in my camel back.
I had two gels and a crepe whilst out on the move. Finished the Haribo and had a crepe at the top of Stiperstones, drank all my carb mix and most of my camelback as well.
After the ride when we got back to the car, I had a full fat coke and a melted Solero ice cream!

I’m not sure what all this equates to, but my biggest worry on the ride was becoming dehydrated. It was a very hot day and I was conscience to keep drinking and getting fluids in where I could.
By the end of the ride, I felt really good! I was a little tired but I didn’t feel beat up and in no way was I struggling at all. Considering climbing 1,381m that day I was pleasantly surprised!
